WEST BOYLSTON – Local authorities are investigating a crash near Wachusett Country Club that occurred early Saturday morning, where an abandoned pickup truck was discovered after having crashed into the woods.

According to a release from the West Boylston Police Department, at about 5 a.m. on Saturday officers responded to reports of a vehicle in the woods near Prospect Street and Wachusett Country Club. Officers located an abandoned pickup truck that had veered off the road and into the woods.

Before the vehicle ended up in the woods, it struck and destroyed a recently installed lighted crosswalk sign, meant to assist pedestrians and golf carts crossing the road. The sign had been acquired through a grant awarded to the W.B.P.D. by the District Attorney's office.

A police K9 unit from Central Mass. Law Enforcement Council was summoned to search for potential injured passengers or the driver, but none were found. Subsequently, the operator was located at a local hospital, where he had been transported by a good Samaritan, suffering from major injuries.

The W.B.P.D. is pursuing charges against the operator, whose identity has not been disclosed. The ongoing investigation is being led by officers Mitchell Rogers and T.J. Provencal.

The crash was the second in 2 days at this location. A day earlier, on Friday, a vehicle was rear-ended while stopped, letting golfers cross the road in the crosswalk.
