AUBURN — A woman was arrested on an operating under the influence charge early Sunday after her vehicle veered off the road, overturned and landed in a small body of water, police said.

Officers responded shortly before 2 a.m. to an automated crash notification but were initially unable to locate the crash, the Auburn Police Department said in a statement.

A short time later, officers found a woman climbing out of the water near an overturned vehicle that had gone down an embankment.

The driver, identified as 36-year-old Jacqueline Sprague of Oxford, and a passenger were evaluated by emergency personnel and did not suffer serious injuries, police said.

Following a roadside investigation, Sprague was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of liquor and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. She was arraigned Monday in Worcester District Court.

Authorities reminded drivers to consider ride-share services such as Uber and Lyft as alternatives to driving under the influence.
