Owner seeks to demolish historic Worcester home

  • Nahum Flagg house Grafton Street dates to the 1950s

The owner of a historic house in Worcester is seeking from the city a waiver that would allow for the home to be demolished.

At risk is the Nahum Flagg House at 525 Grafton Street, the construction of which dates to the 1850s.

Don O’Neil on behalf of the house’s owner, KLA Holdings LLC, petitioned the Worcester Historical Commission for a Building Demolition Delay Waiver, according to the agenda for the Historical Commission meeting. If granted, the owner would not have to wait a year before destroying the home.

The Flagg home is listed on the Mass. Historical Commission’s Mass. Cultural Resource Information System (MACRIS). It was added to the registry in 1977.

Its filing reads: “Built around 1852, the Flagg House was occupied by Nahum Flagg, a farmer, throughout the last half of the nineteenth century. Nahum Flagg , a son of Isaac Flagg, was the brother of the owners of the Flagg Building on Main Street, but seems not to have been involved in the ownership of the Main Street building.

“The house originally had a gable facade, which has been altered in the twentieth century by the removal of the building's pitched roof. The rear of the house has a brick ell which connects to a two-storey brick stable or workshop, also dating from the mid-nineteenth century.”

According to city records, the building is currently a 2-family home with 3,117 square feet of space. It is assessed at $323,300.

KLA Holdings bought the house from the heirs of Frank and Ann Lenti.
