Worcester police thwart daytime break-in, bust armed suspect

  • WORCESTER -- Worcester police officers thwarted a house break-in and arrested an armed suspect in the act.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 24th when police received a report of a burglary in progress on Everard Street.

Officers were given a detailed description of the suspect, who had been seen using a crowbar to force his way into the house.

The first officer spotted a man who matched the suspect's description -- later identified as Devondre Cooper, 43, of Dorchester Street -- holding a crowbar. The officer commanded Cooper to stop, but he ran away through backyards. A short chase ensued, and Cooper was apprehended.

Officers found a backpack that Cooper had dropped, containing a sledgehammer and a handgun. Subsequent investigations confirmed that Cooper had damaged the lock and door frame of the rear of the house. Further, he did not have a license to carry the gun in his possession, resulting in additional charges.

Cooper is charged with several offenses, including breaking and entering during the daytime with intent to commit a felony, possession of burglarious instruments, vandalism, possession of a gun without a License, possession of ammo without an F.I.D. card, and possession of a gun in the commission of a felony.
