Millbrook Street reconstruction starts today, lasts into spring

    WORCESTER — Drivers traveling on Millbrook Street will face a long-term detour beginning Monday, September 14th, as significant reconstruction work gets underway on two bridges, according to the city.

    The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is overseeing reconstruction of the Millbrook Street bridge over the railroad tracks and a second bridge carrying the street over Interstate 190.

    The project includes steel repairs and painting, deck repairs, reconstruction of bridge joints, roadway and sidewalk repairs and other structural and safety improvements intended to extend the life of the bridges and improve roadway conditions.

    Preconstruction work, including surveying and installation of signs, began in March. The more significant phase of construction begins September 14th and is expected to continue through spring 2027.

    During construction, eastbound traffic on Millbrook Street will be detoured. Westbound traffic will remain open across the bridge during all phases of the project, and pedestrians will continue to have access across the bridge.

    The eastbound detour will direct motorists to turn right onto Gold Star Boulevard, loop around to West Boylston Street, bear left toward I-290 Auburn-Shrewsbury, take Exit 1 to I-290 east and then take Exit 23 to Burncoat Street.

    The detour is expected to remain in place throughout construction. Local access to homes and businesses will be maintained.

    Officials are advising motorists to follow posted detour signs, allow additional travel time and consider alternate routes during peak travel periods. Drivers are also being asked to reduce their speed and watch for construction workers and equipment in active work zones.
