Worcester tunnel to close until September for construction

  • WORCESTER — The Ernest A. Johnson Tunnel in Downtown Worcester will be closed for construction beginning Wednesday, May 17th. It is expected to remain closed until September, the City of Worcester Department of Public Works and Parks said on Tuesday.

The closure, which is expected to last approximately four months, or 16 weeks, is due to necessary construction-related activities within the tunnel. This work will include the removal of tiles from the tunnel's ceiling and walls, as well as a comprehensive structural analysis of the tunnel.

The DPW&P is committed to minimizing any inconvenience to residents and will take necessary precautions during the construction period. Residents should be aware that construction vehicles and equipment will be present at the tunnel entrances during regular work hours, which are from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

While the tunnel is closed, residents are encouraged to seek alternative routes and to plan for possible additional travel time. The city has not yet released any information on detour routes during the closure.

The DPW&P emphasized that maintaining the safety and integrity of the tunnel is its top priority. It urges residents to report any issues related to the construction by calling Worcester 311, which can be reached by dialing 311.
