Worcester police find loaded handgun during traffic stop

  • WORCESTER — Worcester Police officers made a significant arrest on Tuesday morning after a routine traffic stop in Downtown Worcester led to the discovery of a loaded gun and other violations.

Shortly after 11 a.m. on December 19th, officers from the Shooting Response Team were on routine patrols near Front Street when an officer spotted a Mercedes making an illegal left turn in front of a "No Left Turn" sign.

The officer activated their lights and initiated a motor vehicle stop near 544 Main Street.

The driver was identified as 32-year-old Kevin Jean of Auburn. After the initial stop, the officer requested backup. Mr. Jean was unable to provide a valid driver's license or vehicle registration and began reaching towards the glove box, causing the officer to exercise caution and wait for backup.

Upon the arrival of additional officers, Mr. Jean was instructed to exit the vehicle.

Initially uncooperative, he became argumentative before ultimately complying with the officers' commands. During a subsequent search, officers discovered an open bottle of vodka and a loaded handgun.

It was determined that Mr. Jean did not possess a valid license to carry firearms.

Mr. Jean was arrested and now faces a series of charges, including carrying a loaded gun without a license, possession of a large capacity gun, possession of a large capacity feeding device, possession of ammunition without an F.I.D. card, and possession of an open container of alcohol.
