WORCESTER — Big Y Supermarkets has announced an investigation into a security breach involving a credit card skimming device at its Worcester location at 100 Mayfield Street.
The supermarket chain revealed that the incident is part of a wider series of skimming attacks that affected several of its Massachusetts stores between December 19th and 21st.
According to the company, an unknown individual managed to install skimming devices on a single terminal in each affected location, including stores in Southbridge, St. James, Springfield, Chicopee (Express), Northampton, Ware; Milford, Wilbraham (Express), and Ludlow. Furthermore, the Westfield location at 1 East Silver Street experienced a similar security compromise from December 19th to January 12th.
Big Y has taken immediate action to address the situation, inspecting all terminals across its locations and collaborating closely with law enforcement to investigate the incidents. The supermarket chain emphasizes the importance of customer security and privacy, assuring the public that it is committed to protecting both customers and the business against such threats.
Customers who shopped at the impacted locations during the specified dates are urged to review their bank and credit card statements for any signs of fraudulent activity. Big Y advises those with concerns or questions to contact their bank or credit card company directly. Additionally, the company has set up a dedicated hotline at 1-800-828-2688, available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., for customers seeking further assistance or information regarding the incident.
The supermarket chain has reiterated its dedication to maintaining stringent security protocols and will notify any customers directly if their information is found to have been compromised. As the investigation continues, Big Y Supermarkets remains vigilant in its efforts to safeguard the privacy and security of its customers across all locations.
