Worcester police arrest man in theft from graveyard

  • WORCESTER — Police arrested a 64-year-old Worcester man in connection with the theft of bronze plaques and veteran grave markers from a local cemetery.

    On December 31st, Worcester police responded to St. John’s Cemetery after reports of stolen bronze plaques. Officers from the Neighborhood Response Team investigated, ultimately recovering 2 missing plaques and 15 additional veteran grave markers from area scrap metal facilities.

    Police identified Arthur Theurer, 64, of Temple Street, as a suspect. Officers arrested Theurer on Thursday, January 2nd, charging him with receiving stolen property over $1,200, vandalizing a gravestone, sale of a stolen grave marker and receipt of a stolen grave marker.

    The recovered items include various markers honoring veterans, and police are seeking the public’s help in returning them to their proper locations. Anyone who recognizes the markers is encouraged to contact the Neighborhood Response Team at 508-799-8664.
