Worcester names John Westerling new D.P.W. Commissioner

  • WORCESTER — City Manager Eric Batista announced Friday the appointment of John Westerling as Worcester’s Commissioner of Public Works & Parks, effective February 18th.

    “Westerling is a committed public works leader with a strong record of implementing community-focused solutions, optimizing operational efficiencies, and successfully managing budgets with fiscal responsibility,” Batista said in a statement.

    Westerling, who has more than 3 decades of public works experience, most recently served as the Director of Public Works for the Town of Natick. Previously, he held leadership roles in Hopkinton, West Boylston, and Holden.

    “I am deeply humbled and honored to have the opportunity to serve the City of Worcester,” Westerling said. “Together, we will ensure that our operations are robust, sustainable, and reflective of the vibrant and diverse community we serve.”

    Westerling, a University of Massachusetts, Amherst graduate with a degree in civil engineering, also holds a master’s degree in public administration from Clark University. He was recognized as an American Public Works Association Top Ten Leader of the Year in 2023.
