Man gets 2 years in prison for embezzling from area nonprofit

  • More than $366,000 stolen from employer

WORCESTER — An area man was sentenced Friday to 2 years in prison for embezzling more than $366,000 from a nonprofit organization in Sturbridge, federal prosecutors said.

Kyriakos Kapiris, also known as Rick Kapiris, 38, of Northborough pleaded guilty in June 2022 to 2 counts of wire fraud and a count of money laundering, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts. In addition to his prison term, he was sentenced to 5 years of supervised release and ordered to pay $371,088.97 in restitution.

Kapiris worked as an information technology manager at Venture Community Services, a nonprofit serving individuals with developmental disabilities.

Prosecutors said that between 2016 and 2020, he used company credit cards to make fraudulent purchases through vendor accounts he controlled. He then transferred the stolen funds into his personal bank accounts and used them for personal expenses, including building a house.

Authorities said Kapiris had a prior theft conviction and was on probation at the time of the scheme. His house was forfeited and sold by the government.
