W.P.D. arrests man with rifle, sword after 9-hour standoff

  • WORCESTER — A Worcester man who allegedly threatened officers with a rifle and brandished a samurai sword was taken into custody Monday evening following a 9 1/2-hour standoff, police said.

Worcester police responded to a welfare check on Forestdale Road shortly after noon on Monday after reports that a resident was making threats that may have involved explosives. Officers, including members of the department’s Crisis Intervention Team and a mental health clinician, found the resident had bolted his door shut.

According to police, 53-year-old Raymond Nydam aimed what appeared to be a rifle at an officer and shouted threats. Officers took cover and called in the Crisis Negotiation Team.

Throughout the afternoon, Nydam continued to yell at police and repeatedly threw objects from his apartment, police said. He was later seen wielding what appeared to be a samurai sword. The department’s SWAT team also responded and assisted in efforts to de-escalate the situation.

After more than 9 hours of negotiation, Nydam exited the apartment and was taken into custody without further incident. He was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.

No injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation.
