W.P.D. mourns tragic loss of animal control officer at age 41

    WORCESTER — The Worcester Police Department is mourning the sudden loss of longtime Animal Control Officer Matthew T. Ohman, who died Sunday while playing basketball with his family. He was 41.

    Ohman, of Millbury, collapsed after winning a game he was playing with relatives, according to his obituary. Known for his competitive spirit and lifelong passion for sports, Ohman had been a fixture in Worcester’s animal control operations for the past 12 years, following in the footsteps of his grandfather by joining the department.

    Born in Worcester and raised in Grafton, Ohman was a standout athlete at Grafton High School, serving as captain of the hockey team and earning 2 MVP honors. He later attended Quinsigamond Community College, where he pitched for the baseball team. Friends and family remembered him as a devoted husband, father, and friend whose warmth, humor and kindness matched his love for competition.

    Ohman is survived by his wife, Krystina; their children, Landon and Riley; his parents, Thomas and Gayle Ohman; his brother, Thomas Jr.; his sister, Melissa Ohman-Ramadan; and many extended family members and friends.

    Calling hours will be held Sunday, August 17th, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel in Worcester. A funeral service is scheduled for Monday, August 18th, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ohman Children’s Scholarship Fund at the Worcester Police Department Federal Credit Union.
