Juvenile burglary suspect tries to jump into pond to flee cops

  • WORCESTER — A juvenile burglary suspect was arrested recently after jumping into a Worcester pond in an attempt to escape from police.

    According to the Worcester Police Department, officers were dispatched around 4:27 a.m. Thursday to a Mill Street home for a reported breaking and entering in progress. The resident told police they were watching the suspect on their security cameras and gave officers a detailed description.

    Several officers searched the area and spotted the suspect, who fled on foot. A perimeter was set up, and the search continued into the morning.

    Shortly before 6:39, a State Police trooper found a male matching the description on Glendale Street. The suspect ran again, ending up in a backyard near Patch Pond. With officers closing in, police said, he jumped into the pond in an apparent attempt to get away.

    Officers deployed a rescue floatation device, known as a “Manny Tube,” for safety before entering the water to bring the suspect to shore. The juvenile was wrapped in a thermal blanket and taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

    He faces charges of unarmed burglary in the nighttime, 2 counts of larceny under $1,250, 2 counts of malicious destruction of property, possession of burglarious tools, and resisting arrest.

    Police said detectives are also investigating whether the suspect may be connected to 2 recent break-ins in the Tatnuck Square area.
