Market 32 and Price Chopper is giving shoppers a chance to double the value of their spare pennies during a one-day “Double Exchange Day” event Sunday.
The promotion, running from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at all store locations, allows customers to exchange rolled or loose pennies for Market 32 or Price Chopper gift cards worth twice the cash value. For example, $10 in pennies earns a $20 gift card redeemable on future in-store purchases. Exchanges must total at least 50 cents and no more than $100.
The grocers said the initiative comes as the national penny supply continues to shrink. The U.S. Treasury plans to end penny production in 2026, leading to fewer coins in circulation and making it harder for retailers to provide exact change to customers who prefer paying with cash.
“Cash transactions remain an important part of how we serve our customers,” said Blaine Bringhurst, president of Market 32 and Price Chopper. “Double Exchange Day gives our customers an opportunity to partner with us… while being rewarded for supporting us in managing our coin inventory responsibly as the nation prepares for the phase-out of pennies.”
Bringhurst added that the offer may also help families facing financial hardships across the chain’s 6-state footprint.
Double Exchange Day coincides with the launch of the company’s Holiday AdvantEdge Rewards Doubler, which boosts seasonal savings. Additional Thanksgiving promotions will be announced later this week, also beginning Nov. 16.
