Juveniles charged after Boys & Girls Club Way shooting

  • WORCESTER — A pair of 17-year-old juveniles have been arrested following a joint investigation into a September shooting on Boys & Girls Club Way, authorities said.

Detectives with the Worcester Police Department said one of the juveniles is facing charges connected to the shooting, as well as gun possession, while the second juvenile faces drug and ammunition charges.

According to police, the arrests stem from an investigation led by the department’s Detective Bureau, with assistance from the Crime Gun Unit and Gang Unit. During the course of that investigation, the Crime Gun Unit worked with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service on a separate probe into illegal gun possession and manufacturing involving the same shooting suspect and another juvenile.

On Tuesday, December 30th, detectives executed 2 search warrants — 1 at an address on Boys & Girls Club Way and another on Oberlin Street. Police said a gun, ammunition, and tools and instruments used in firearm manufacturing were recovered.

The updated arrests follow a September 25th shooting incident that prompted a ShotSpotter alert shortly before 5:40 p.m. Officers responding to Boys & Girls Club Way found a gun and additional evidence, along with a bullet hole in the rear passenger door of a vehicle and another in the front window of an apartment, police said.

During the initial response, officers observed a man later identified as 22-year-old Willie Watson of Worcester running through traffic on Hammond Street while clutching his waistband. Police said Watson was apprehended and found to be carrying a loaded gun without a license. He faces multiple gun-related charges, as well as charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace.

Shortly afterward, a second man, identified as 20-year-old Chance Toney, arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound that was not considered life-threatening. Investigators determined Toney was also armed at the scene and did not have a license to carry, police said. He faces gun charges and an outstanding warrant.

Police said no members of the public were injured in the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
