Worcester man found slumped in car faces gun charges

    WORCESTER — A Worcester man found slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle Wednesday night was arrested after police said officers discovered a gun and suspected fentanyl.

    Officers assigned to the Worcester Police Department’s Summer Impact unit found the man at about 10:45 p.m. July 22nd on Church Street, according to a department release issued Thursday.

    Police said officers saw illegal drug paraphernalia in the man’s lap before opening the driver’s-side door and waking him. The man then began reaching beneath his seat and was removed from the vehicle, police said.

    Officers found a leather holster near the area where he had been reaching, according to police.

    The driver was identified as Charles Harris, 58, of Worcester. Police said a search of Harris found a bag containing suspected fentanyl.

    Officers later searched the vehicle and found a gun inside a backpack, police said. An investigation determined Harris did not have a license to carry or a firearm identification card.

    Members of the department’s Crime Scene Unit responded to process the gun.

    Harris was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being charged with possession of a large-capacity gun, possession of a gun without an F.I.D. card, carrying a gun without a license, possession of ammunition without an F.I.D. card, improper storage of a gun and possession of a Class A drug.
