Grand opening today of bar at old Maxwell’s Silverman’s

  • Freeplay Bar & Arcade’s Worcester location nearly 2 years in the making

    When the doors open to the public at 25 Union Street at 5 p.m. Thursday, for the first time since 1976 they will not open to Maxwell Silverman’s Toolhouse.

    Freeplay Bar & Arcade will celebrate its grand opening today, a project that’s been nearly 2 years in the making.

    In a Facebook post on July 19, Freeplay wrote: “Mark your calendars for the Grand Opening of Freeplay Worcester! The excitement starts on Thursday July 29th and runs through Saturday July 31st!”

    Freeplay, which first opened in Providence in August 2017, bills itself as New England's largest bar arcade. According to its website, the Worcester location will open with 81 video games and 18 pinball machines, as well as air hockey, bubble hockey and skee ball.

    All games are free to play with $10 admission, according to the Facebook post.

    The bar serves craft cocktails and has over 50 beers to choose from.

    Freeplay is for ages 21 and older. Admission is $10, according to the Facebook post.

    Freeplay will be open 5 p.m.-1 p.m. today and 5 p.m.-2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, according to its website. Admission will end an hour before close.

    In September 2018, Gus Giordano, owner of Maxwell Silverman's announced he was leaving the Union Street location for his other successful operation at Union Station. “Maxwell Silverman’s has stood the test of time, but this will be my last year here,” he told the Telegram & Gazette at the time. 

    Freeplay made its Worcester plans public in August 2019 when it went before the License Commission.
