Passer-by sees break-in, pins suspect until W.P.D. arrives

  • WORCESTER — A juvenile was arrested early Saturday morning for a break-in at a local smoke shop after a passer-by intervened and detained him until police arrived, according to the Worcester Police Department.

    Officers were called to The Habibi Smokeshop at 650 Main Street shortly after 3 a.m. after the witness reported the incident. The alert citizen had noticed the glass door of the establishment had been shattered and spotted the young male suspect entering the premises.

    Upon their arrival, police found the suspect, a 17-year-old male, being physically restrained on the ground by the witness.

    A tote bag with stolen items and a hammer, presumed to be used in breaking the glass door, were recovered at the scene.

    The teenager has been charged with multiple offenses, including breaking and entering in the nighttime for a felony, vandalism, larceny from a building, and possession of a burglarious instrument.
