2-time Olympian living in Worcester hurt in skydiving accident

  • WORCESTER — A 2-time Olympian now living in Worcester faces multiple surgeries and a lengthy recovery after recently suffering several broken bones and a serious spinal injury in a skydiving accident.

Dmitri Kazarlyga was seriously injured Monday, according to a GoFundMe organized by his stepdaughter, Kassie Carpentier. The fundraiser says Kazarlyga was facing emergency surgery, with additional surgeries expected.

“He suffered multiple significant injuries, including several broken bones and serious injury to his spine,” Carpentier wrote on the fundraiser. “He is currently facing emergency surgery with more surgeries ahead of him and a long road to recovery.”

Kazarlyga represented Kazakhstan in ice dancing at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer and 1998 Games in Nagano. He also competed 6 times at the World Championships.

According to the fundraiser, Kazarlyga trained in Kazakhstan and at the Lake Placid Olympic Center under coach Natalia Dubova before becoming a highly decorated ice dancer.

Kazarlyga is now a coach in Salem, N.H., where he works with ice dancers. His athletes have competed nationally and internationally, including at world and European championships and Grand Prix events.

Carpentier said the family created the fundraiser to help with emergency medical care, surgeries, recovery costs and living expenses while Kazarlyga is unable to work.

As of Thursday afternoon, the GoFundMe had raised just short of $24,000 toward a $50,000 goal.

“We are so incredibly grateful for all of the prayers, love, and support that have already been shown to our family,” Carpentier wrote.
