  • Lowell Street fire: Six things you need to know
     
    1. The call for a fire in the basement came in at 3:58 a.m. The fire grew to 5 alarms. 7 Lowell Street is an apartment building in Main South. It is owned by Richard T. Rawson Sr. of Worcester. The property description on file with the City of Worcester states there is an unfinished basement of 3,532 square feet.
     
     
    2. A dozen residents were displaced. Worcester Emergency Management thanked the nearby McDonald's for taking care of the residents.

    3.  "Conditions deteriorated rapidly," according to Chief Mike Lavoie. Firefighters, including the Rapid Intervention Team, extricated five via ladders from the second floor. Two were taken to a local hospital.
     

    4. Worcester firefighter Christopher Roy later died at the hospital. The 36-year-old had worked for the department for 2 1/2 years. He lived in Shrewsbury and had an 9-year-old daughter. He was assigned to Ladder 4, Group 3 at the Webster Square fire station. His parents are Worcester residents and he has a brother. 
     

     
    5. In the aftermath of the fire, firefighters at the Webster Square fire station put up black bunting to mourn their fallen colleague. Mass. Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, Mayor Joe Petty, City Manager Ed Augustus and others visited the scene with Chief Mike Lavoie. Condolences come in from all over the Commonwealth.

    6. The fire came one day after the anniversary of the death of Worcester firefighter Jon Davies, who died in the line of duty in 2011, and less than a week after the 19th anniversary of the Worcester Cold Storage Warehouse fire that claimed the lives of six Worcester firefighters.
